Chessie's Big Backyard 2026: The Ultimate Free Family Spot in Alexandria VA
By Jennifer C. Williams, LCPC, PMH-C
If you want a free, fully accessible playground that has it all, this one belongs at the top of your DMV summer list.
Chessie's Big Backyard at Franconia Park in Alexandria, Virginia is one of the most loved family recreation areas in the entire metro region. The playground is open year round. The carousel is open seasonally. And the Our Special Harbor sprayground opens for the 2026 season this Memorial Day weekend.
We are at the perfect time to plan your first visit.
Let me break it all down.
What Makes Chessie's Big Backyard Different
This is not your average playground. Chessie's Big Backyard is built to include EVERY kid, no matter their ability.
The whole recreation area was designed with accessibility at the center. Kids with special needs play side by side with typically developing kids. Wheelchairs roll right up the wide ramps. Sensory features are everywhere. There is no fee for general admission, ever.
The recreation area has 4 main attractions:
Chessie's Big Backyard Playground (open year round)
The Treehouse (open year round)
The Carousel (seasonal)
Our Special Harbor Sprayground (opens Memorial Day weekend 2026)
Plus a sensory trail with a sound garden, spinning rocks, a boardwalk, and wildlife sculptures throughout.
The 2026 Season Update You Need to Know
Our Special Harbor, the Chesapeake-Bay-themed sprayground, has been closed since last fall. It is reopening for the 2026 season.
Expected opening: Memorial Day weekend (May 23, 2026)
The sprayground is the BIG summer draw. It is FREE for individuals. It has been ranked one of the top splash pads in the entire country by USA Today.
Features include:
Computerized water mazes
Spraying osprey nest
Dumping crab basket
Misting sunflowers
Chessie the Sea Serpent
A quieter beach area for younger kids with soft bubblers and water tables
If your family has been waiting for sprayground season, this weekend is the moment.
What We Loved
The accessibility. This is the most inclusive playground we have ever visited. Kids with mobility devices have full access. Sensory-friendly features are built in. There is even a sensory friendly hour at Our Special Harbor for kids who need reduced sensory input.
The playground itself. Soft rubber floors. Wide ramps. Plenty of slides. The structure is designed for ages 5 to 12 but my younger one had a blast on the toddler-friendly elements too. Blue shade awnings keep it cool even on hot days.
The treehouse. This thing is magical. You walk up ramps that wind around the tree trunks until you reach the treehouse at the top. The views overlook a forest and stream valley. My boys could have stayed up there all day.
The carousel. Chesapeake Bay themed. Turtles, frogs, hummingbirds, and swans instead of horses. Fully accessible. Wheelchair-accessible ride options included. Carousel fee: $4 per person, Monday-Friday; $5 per person, Saturday, Sunday and holidays
After-Hour/Season Rental Fee (Per Hour)*$ 100
The walking trail. A 2,160-foot sensory trail with a sound garden, spinning rocks, boardwalk, nest seating, and wildlife sculptures of animals native to the Chesapeake Bay region.
The free price tag. Everything is FREE for individuals. Group reservations of 10 or more have a small fee, but for families just showing up, you pay nothing.

Here is the real talk no one tells you.
Arrive early in summer. The sprayground has a 247-person capacity. When they hit that number, they form a line outside. Get there at opening on hot weekend days.
Aquatic shoes are required for the sprayground. Kids 15 and younger must wear aquatic shoes or sandals with a manufactured back strap. Flip-flops are NOT allowed for kids. Adults can wear flip-flops. Non-walking babies are exempt.
No outside food or drink in the sprayground. Water in non-glass containers is OK. Everything else stays at your picnic spot.
Picnic shelters can be reserved. Several shelters available, most accommodate up to 30 people, with tables, benches, grills, and nearby restrooms. Great for birthday parties or family gatherings.
Sensory friendly hours exist. If your child has sensory sensitivities, Our Special Harbor offers reduced-sensory time slots with limited capacity, quieter water features, and trained staff. Check the Fairfax County Park Authority website for the 2026 sensory friendly schedule.
Wheelchair loans available at the sprayground. They have specialized wheelchairs you can borrow at no cost. Game changer for families who need them.
Plan for changing facilities to be limited. Arrive dressed for the sprayground if you can. Save the changing facilities for after.
The carousel has a fee. Most everything else is free, but the carousel typically charges a per-ride fee. Carousel fee: $4 per person, Monday-Friday; $5 per person, Saturday, Sunday and holidays
It gets HOT in summer. There is shade, but a lot of the playground is in the sun. Bring sunscreen, hats, and extra water.
The trail is stroller and wheelchair friendly. The 2,160-foot sensory trail is fully paved and accessible. Bring the stroller for younger kids who get tired.
Tips for Your Visit
1. Arrive at opening on hot weekend days. Sprayground capacity fills fast. First in, best experience.
2. Pack a picnic. No outside food in the sprayground itself, but you can eat at the pavilions. Bring snacks and lunch. Pre-prepared food only (no cooking on site outside of grills at reserved shelters).
3. Bring aquatic shoes for everyone under 15. Required for sprayground access. Adults can skip them.
4. Reserve a picnic shelter for parties. If you have a group of 10 or more, reserve through the Franconia Park Reservable Areas page. Worth it for birthday parties.
5. Hit the playground and treehouse first. The sprayground often opens at 11 AM during peak summer. Use the morning for playground time, then transition to water play.
6. Bring sunscreen and water. A lot of the playground is in the sun. Hydration matters.
7. Plan for the full Family Recreation Area. Don't just do the playground. Visit the treehouse, walk the sensory trail, ride the carousel. The full experience is worth a half-day minimum.
8. Check the sensory friendly schedule if you need it. Wednesdays often have sensory friendly time at Our Special Harbor. Confirm the 2026 schedule on the park website.
9. Bring a change of clothes. Even if you didn't plan to do the sprayground, your kid will probably end up in it. Trust me.
10.Snacks are for sale: There is a small snack stand outside of the sprayground that sells beverages, ice cream, and snacks.
What This Trip Taught My Family
We talk a lot about the CARE Framework in our house: Curiosity, Adventure, Resilience, and Emotional Intelligence.
Chessie's Big Backyard hits all four.
Curiosity lit up when my boys discovered the Chesapeake Bay wildlife sculptures along the sensory trail.
Adventure showed up climbing the ramps to the treehouse and exploring every level.
Resilience kicked in when they waited their turn in line at the sprayground without losing it.
Emotional Intelligence was the moment my older son helped a younger kid who looked nervous about the dumping water bucket.
That last one is what I take with me every time we come here. The inclusive design of this park brings kids together across abilities. My boys learn empathy just by playing alongside kids who experience the world differently.
That is the kind of teaching no classroom can match.
