Clearwater Beach, Florida: The Ultimate Family Playground (And We Have Proof)

We call it a Playtime Adventure for a reason.
Clearwater Beach, Florida lived up to every single thing we hoped it would be. And then some. From the moment we hit that sand to the last sunset at Pier 60, this trip reminded us why we travel as a family in the first place.
If you’re looking for a Florida beach vacation that genuinely works for kids of all ages with energy, activities, food, and beauty all in one place, Clearwater Beach is your answer.
Where We Went
Clearwater Beach is located on a barrier island off the Gulf Coast of Florida, just west of Tampa and St. Petersburg. It consistently ranks among the best beaches in the United States, and after visiting, we understand why completely.
The Gulf water is crystal clear and warm. The sand is powder-white. The best part: Pier 60 the heart of Clearwater Beach activities keeps everyone entertained long after sunscreen has been reapplied three times.
What We Loved
Building sandcastles and splashing all day.
This is the kind of beach that makes you forget about your phone. The Gulf water is calm, warm, and clear, perfect for kids. Our boys could not get enough. From building sandcastles to running straight into waves, Clearwater was the ultimate family playground. That’s not an exaggeration. That’s exactly what it felt like.
Pier 60 street performers and sunset celebrations.
Pier 60 is one of those places that earns its reputation. Every evening, street performers, artists, and entertainers gather for the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 festival and kids are absolutely captivated. Jugglers, musicians, magicians, face painters the boys were excited. The sunsets over the Gulf? Stunning doesn’t cover it. This is one of those travel moments you just sit in.
Crystal-clear pools with the best views.
When we weren’t on the beach, we were in the pool. Clearwater Beach has resort pools that look directly out over the Gulf. You are swimming with a view that most places charge extra for just to see from a balcony.
The food.
There are so many restaurant options in Clearwater Beach that food is never a problem and everyone is satisfied. Waterfront dining, casual beachside spots, seafood, pizza, the variety is real and the views from most of them are genuinely beautiful. We savored delicious meals with scenery that made us feel like we were on a much fancier trip than we’d planned.
What’s Great for Kids (By Age)
Toddlers (ages 1-3):
The Gulf water at Clearwater is gentle, calm waves, gradual depth, warm temperatures. This is one of the most toddler-appropriate ocean beaches in the country. Pier 60 also has a playground area nearby. Strollers work well on the beach walk and around Pier 60.
Little Kids (ages 4-7):
The street performers at Pier 60 are made for this age. They will stand there with their mouths open watching the entire show. The beach and pool are endless entertainment. Add in a beach toy kit and you have a full day with zero complaints.
Elementary Kids (ages 8-11):
Old enough to appreciate the beauty of the place. They’ll love the performers, the freedom of the beach, the pool, and exploring around Pier 60 shops and snack options. Parasailing and dolphin tours are available for adventurous families with older kids.
Tweens:
The atmosphere at Clearwater Beach is lively enough to keep tweens interested. Evening at Pier 60 is especially great for this age, there’s energy, entertainment, and they feel like they’re in the middle of something exciting.
CARE Connection:
Clearwater Beach feeds the Curiosity and Adventure pillars through the street performances, the natural wonder of the Gulf, and the sheer physical joy of an all-day beach day. The evening Pier 60 celebration also opens conversations about art, performance, and community, all of which feed emotional intelligence naturally.

Parking: Plan Ahead or Pay the Price
Parking is the most challenging part of Clearwater Beach and the thing most parents wish they’d known before arriving. Here’s the real breakdown:
The Pier 60 parking lot is the most popular spot, it’s right in the center of all the action. It runs $3 per hour with no time limit, but it only has 139 spaces. Get there early or it will be full.
For more availability, the parking garages are your best bet: North Beach Parking Plaza (490 Poinsettia Ave), Hyatt Aqualea (301 S. Gulfview Blvd.), and Britt’s Surf Style (311 S. Gulfview Blvd.) all offer covered parking near the beach. Rates start at $3/hour.
Pro tip: To avoid parking congestion altogether, consider the Park and Ride option. Park for free at Old City Hall (112 S. Osceola Avenue, Clearwater) and take the Jolly Trolley Beach Route to the beach. Download the Flamingo app before you go, the trolley doesn’t accept cash or cards onboard. For a family that wants a stress-free morning, this is the move.
Arrive Early: This One Is Non-Negotiable
If you’re planning a day at Clearwater Beach, arriving early is not optional — it’s the move. The beach fills up fast, the parking lots go quickly, and most importantly: chairs and prime setup spots go even faster. Get there before 9am if you want a good spot to plant your umbrella, lay out your towels, and actually have the space to set up your whole family situation without feeling like you’re on top of strangers. Once you have your spot claimed, the whole day flows. Come late and you’re spending the first hour stressed about logistics instead of enjoying the beach.
Stroller Friendly
Yes. The Beach Walk at Clearwater Beach is a half-mile trail along the beach that is stroller-accessible. Pier 60 and the surrounding areas are also navigable with a stroller. If you’re bringing a beach wagon or cart, even better — easier to haul all the sand gear.
Bathrooms
Public restrooms are available near Pier 60 and along the Beach Walk. They’re serviceable and accessible. Changing facilities are available, which matters when you have little ones in wet swimsuits. Rinse stations are near beach access points — great for sand removal before getting back in the car.
Food and Dining
Clearwater Beach is genuinely family-friendly when it comes to food. This matters when you’re traveling with picky eaters and hungry kids. There are lots of family-friendly food options around Pier 60 and the surrounding area, from casual beachside spots to sit-down waterfront restaurants. You’ll find kid-friendly menus, quick-service options, and enough variety that even the most particular little eater will find something they like. Beachside casual runs $12-20 per entree. Sit-down waterfront dining is $20-40+ per person. For budget-conscious families, packing a cooler with lunch saves significantly since outside food is allowed on the public beach. But if you want to eat out, you will not struggle to find something everyone at the table is happy with.

Best Time to Visit
Late April through early June is the sweet spot: warm water, fewer crowds than peak summer, and lower accommodation rates. We went in May and it was lovely. If you go in peak summer (July-August), expect full beaches and strong sun. Go early, bring shade, and stay hydrated.
Accessibility
Clearwater Beach has a mobility mat at Pier 60 for guests with mobility needs — a 100-foot accessible pathway parallel to the pier. Handicap parking in city-owned lots is complimentary with a valid placard.
What to Bring That the Beach Website Won’t Tell You
A beach wagon or cart (hauling gear for a family is exhausting without one)
Reef-safe sunscreen (Florida has some reef protection guidelines)
A small pop-up shade tent if you have babies or toddlers
Water shoes for the little ones (the sand gets hot midday)
Extra towels (always one more than you think)
