SEA LIFE at American Dream With Kids: Sharks, Touch Pools, and All the TEA

Thinking about taking the kids to SEA LIFE at American Dream in New Jersey?

Short answer: yes. It is one of the easiest indoor wins you will find near New York City.

Sharks glide over your head. Rays cruise by. Kids press their noses to the glass and forget they were ever bored. All of it sits inside one of the biggest malls in the country, so rain or shine it is a great day to go visit.

But before you buy your tickets, let me give you the tea. The stuff the ticket page will not tell you.

The quick version

Here is what a busy parent needs at a glance:

• Best for ages: all ages, toddlers and up

• Time to plan for: about 1 to 1.5 hours for the aquarium alone

• Stroller friendly: yes, bring your own; the space is fully accessible with elevators

• Where: 1 American Dream Way, Suite A, Upper Level, East Rutherford, New Jersey, inside American Dream mall

• Snacks: not inside; eat before or after in the mall

What makes it worth it

The big draw is the walk-through ocean tunnel called City Under the Sea.

Sharks, rays, and tropical fish glide right over your head while you walk. Kids stop in their tracks for this part. So do the grown-ups.

There is also a touch pool where kids can gently meet creatures up close. There is a sink for you to wash your hands first, the boys absolutely loved this. We also thought that it was very cool that many of the exhibits themed to famous New York City spots. Think eels swimming like rush-hour taxi cabs and jellyfish glowing like tiny disco lights.

All together, the aquarium holds over 3,000 sea creatures across more than 100 species.

That is a lot of "whoa" in one visit.

The real tea for parents

Here is what I want you to know before you go:

• You bring your own stroller- The aquarium is fully accessible with elevators, but they do not rent strollers or wheelchairs. So pack yours.

• No outside food or drink- They do not allow snacks or drinks inside, except for babies or a child with food allergies. Feed everyone first, or plan to eat in the mall after. We ate at The Yard House on the 3rd floor prior to visiting the aquarium.

• Parking is paid and separate- American Dream has garages and lots. Parking is not included with your ticket, so check the site for current rates and any validation deals. We paid $6 for parking at the time of our visit.

• An adult has to stay with the kids- Children need a grown-up age 16 or older with them the whole time.

• Book online to save- Tickets usually cost less online than at the door, and it locks in your spot.

• Location- Level 1, Court A. Use parking lot A for the easiest entrance.

A note for sensory-sensitive kids

The tunnel is dim. Some rooms are dark with bright glowing tanks.

For some kids, that is pure magic. For others, it can feel like a lot.

If your child gets overwhelmed by dark spaces or big crowds, go on a slower weekday morning if you can. Bring headphones if noise is tough. And know that it is okay to move fast through the parts that feel like too much.

You know your kids. Trust that.

• Emotionally Intelligent. Name feelings out loud as they come. "That shark surprised you." "You felt so calm watching the jellyfish." You can even wonder together how the animals feel. That builds empathy and emotional words your child gets to keep.

You do not need a lesson plan. You just need to notice these moments and talk about them.

We were extremely lucky to meet LeeAnn as she was working during our visit. She taught us so many fun facts about the aquarium, made up a fun story with us, and answered all of our many questions. We always love meeting great staff on our adventures, and LeeAnn made this an excellent trip for learning and fun.

Booking online ahead of time usually saves you money and locks in your spot.
